The long weekend is fast approaching and it is a perfect time to spend some quality time outside with your animal friends. Here are some pet-friendly activities to do that follow the COVID-19 guidelines!
Find some green space
Take advantage of the warm weather and go for a family walk on a local trail. Most trails, parks and conservation areas are now open and are great pet-friendly activities. However, it’s a good idea to check the park website online before you make the drive if the park isn’t local to you. You can also take a picnic to the park, find a spot at least six feet apart from others, and dig in. Don’t forget to follow local public health guidelines to help slow and stop the spread of COVID-19.
Make homemade treats or toys for your pet
This is a fun idea to keep you and your pet entertained! Examples of toys include tennis ball treat dispensers, and hand-tied ropes or a knotted towel. For more ideas, read Summer DIY Dog Toys.
Treasure hunt
A treasure hunt is a simple activity to put together for your dog. First, buy some special treats or toys for your dog. Second, place them around your backyard while your dog is inside. Lastly, let your dog outside in the yard and watch them hunt for the items. You could also make a trail of treats for your pets to follow. Find more great enrichment ideas on ShelterHealthPro.com!
Visit a dog park
Search dog parks in your area and let your dog have some fun! Remember to stay six feet apart from other visitors and pack water for both you and your dog to stay hydrated.
Plan a camping or cottage weekend
Depending on where you live, campgrounds or cottage rentals may be open. Do your research before booking and make sure you understand the restrictions and precautions associated with your campground or rental. In addition, don’t forget to confirm whether pets are permitted to ensure everyone has a great weekend. Ontario Parks is a great place to start!
Have a “staycation” in your backyard
Pet-friendly activities don’t need to be complicated! For example, pick out a new toy or make a DIY one for your pet, turn on a sprinkler and make some yummy treats. Relax, have fun and enjoy some quality family time!
Work on your dog’s training
Another great way to spend some of your extra time is to teach your dog a few tricks! On our Shelter Health Pro website, we have training tips to help every dog parent successfully teach some skills to their pup. Check it out!
