Thanksgiving pet safety tips

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and if you’re planning a fall feast, remember to take precautions to keep your furry friends safe. Here are some hazards to be aware of over the holiday.

Food dangers

Human food, especially holiday treats, can overwhelm your animal’s digestive system with excessive fat, protein or sugar. That’s why it is recommended that you limit food from the table. Make sure to be extra careful when cooking with or serving grapes, raisins, chocolate, and onion, as they are toxic to dogs.

Try keeping your animal in a different room – or a crate if he or she is comfortable – and offer them a special treat while you are eating dinner.

Decorations

Decorations can look appealing to your pets and can be toxic if consumed or may cause dangerous intestinal blockages. Always make sure to place decorations out of reach from pets and to supervise your animals when they’re around your decorations. It is also a good idea to use battery powered candles around pets to avoid burns and potential fires.

Visitors

If you are having guests over, consider their comfort level around your pets. In addition, your pets may become very excited around guests. This is a good time to practise good house manners by keeping your dog on a leash or in a crate while they adjust to your guests.

Veterinarian visits

Remember that your veterinarian is probably enjoying the holiday weekend as well. Be aware of the closest emergency veterinary clinic and have their contact information on hand.
